Slate is a natural stone product mined from local quarries in most cases. Slate will normally have a dull matt appearance and can be porous. The pores of slate will absorb dirt, dust and debris. The absorbtion of this dirt and grime will lead to the build up and discoloration on the slate surface. The application of slate sealer will provide a barrier over the pores in the slate allowing for easier cleaning and maintenance. The application of sealer also visually enhances the appearance of slate.
The slate sealing process can sometimes be simple and in other cases our slate tile sealing can be quite involved because it is the preparation of the slate that must be carried out thoroughly to ensure a high quality result. The process is dependant on the style of the slate floor, location, previous slate sealer build up, level of soiling.
Slate floors can suffer from several defects that can cause problems during the slate sealing process and some of these can be due to water ingress or trapped moisture levels which can appear like a white discolouration or milky appearance. Slate can also flake off in some areas and this can be uncovered during the cleaning, stripping and sealing process. It is important that we remove any loose flaking slate prior to application of the sealer otherwise this can flake off at a later point on time to alter the surface appearance.
Old sealer can be stripped off to provide a superior result and strong bond to the slate. Slate floor tile stripping is a big job but is worth the extra effort if your slate floor is looking dull or dirty. This process is also important if the old sealant is not bonding to the slate very well.
